SA-6404 PCI-X array controller. NIC2, an embedded Gigabit Ethernet controller, or a Dual
port Gigabit Ethernet controller, is used as the system interconnect.
ProLiant DL380 G5 or G4 2U servers if the system interconnect is other than Ethernet. Each
DL380 Object Storage Server has 2 GB of memory or more, a single 72GB disk drive, and
one or two SA-6404 PCI-X array controllers. The other PCI slot contains a Dual port Gigabit
Ethernet controller, InfiniBand card, Myrinet XP or 2XP PCI card, or a Quadrics QsNetII
PCI-X NIC for connection to the system interconnect.
Each MDS server, administrative server, and Object Storage Server has a minimum of one Smart
Array 6404 Controller (SA-6404), and one embedded dual-controller PCI-X Ultra320 SCSI
controller. Each controller has two ports for a total of four ports on the module.
Each SA-6404 controller is connected to two or four HP SFS20 Enclosures. There can be a maximum
of two SA-6404 adapters when the server is a Proliant DL380 for maximum of eight HP SFS20s
per server. Each SFS20 enclosure has the capacity for up to 12 serial advanced technology
attachment (SATA) disks. The cables between the SA-6404 and the HP SFS20 Enclosure are
very-high-density cable interconnect (VHDCI) SCSI cables.
The ProCurve switches are mounted in the base rack with the MDS, administrative, and Object
Storage Servers. Each MDS and Object Storage Server has two connections to a ProCurve Switch:
one for Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) and one for the management network (embedded Gigabit
Ethernet controller, NIC1). Each server also has a connection to the interconnect switch in the
compute cluster.
1.3 System Interconnect Overview
When the HP SFS system provides the file system storage for a single compute cluster, the
administration server, MDS server, and each Object Storage Server is connected to the interconnect
switch in the compute cluster. The interconnect can be one of the following:
