IAP Data Replication
Overview
The IAP Data Replication Option enables you to replicate an IAP Base System to a secondary IAP
Base System, either locally or remotely over IP. The Replica IAP provides the same functionalities as
the primary site (search, data retrieval, etc.). The goal of replication is to improve systems’ and data
availability and reliability by maintaining redundant resources in separate locations – IAP replication
provides both.
When the IAP system is replicated, the same data from the primary SmartCell (SC) group(s) are stored
on additional SmartCell groups in a second IAP system, ensuring data consistency and availability.
The replication option allows the IAP Base Systems to be configured in either an "active-active“ (2-
way) or an "active-passive" (1-way) mode and asynchronously replicates your data from the Primary
IAP to the Replica IAP. Therefore, the replicas are continuously updated to reflect the same data as
on the Primary IAP system. (Although a backup saves a copy of the data in case a restoration is
needed due to a catastrophic failure, the data is static and remains unchanged from the point at
which the backup was made.)
The replication option is a key feature IAP provides its users in terms of enabling enterprise disaster
recovery strategies and solutions. While there is already some redundancy built into the IAP system by
the mirroring of the primary SC to the secondary SC, replication produces an even higher level of
redundancy for disaster recovery. These replicated cells can be used to recover the originals in case
of a SmartCell failure. In addition, if the Primary IAP fails, the Replica IAP can be switched to take
over the tasks of the failed system (a switch that is transparent to the end user).
This whitepaper describes one process that can be used to recover your data from the replica
SmartCells (from the Replica IAP) in case of a complete failure of both the primary and secondary
SmartCells on the Primary IAP.
Common Terminology and Concepts
• Primary IAP (i.e., an IAP Base System) – the IAP system that data is replicated from
• Replica IAP (i.e., also an IAP Base System) – the IAP system that data is replicated to
• An IAP Base System includes a minimum of one pair of SmartCells (i.e., a SmartCell group)
• The Replica IAP also includes a minimum of one pair of SmartCells
• Each SmartCell group has two mirrored SmartCells
• Primary SmartCell – the primary SmartCell on the Primary IAP
• Secondary SmartCell – the secondary SmartCell on the Primary IAP
• Replica1 SmartCell – the primary SmartCell on the Replica IAP
• Replica2 SmartCell – the secondary SmartCell on the Replica IAP
