HP StorageWorks 1510i Modular Smart Array iSCSI concepts and deployment guide (431338-002, July 2008)
Table Of Contents
Portal group A group of network portals that may be used together in a session.
Protocol Data Unit
(PDU)
Initiator and targets divide their communications into messages. The term PDU
is used for these messages.
Session A group of TCP connections that link an initiator with a target.
Storage Area
Network (SAN)
A network of host computers and mass storage devices. Used to share disks
and tapes with multiple hosts. SANs move stored data at the block level and
have no awareness of file structure.
Target Generically, an iSCSI target is a storage device such as the MSA1510i. An iSCSI
target is a named iSCSI entity that has associated access controls and LUNs.
TCP (Transmission
Control Protocol
A common Internet protocol that insures packets arrive at the end point in order,
acknowledged, and error-free. Usually combined with IP in the Phrase TCP/IP.
TOE (TCP/IP
Offload Engine
A piece of hardware that implements the TCP/IP stack, thereby “offloading” this
task from the main processor.
TSID (Target
Session Identifier)
A 16–bit number, generated by the target, that uniquely identifies a session
between the initiator and the target. This number is generated during the login
process and is sent to the initiator with a Login Response PDU.
Virtual LAN
(VLAN)
VLANs are logical, independent workgroups within a network. These
workgroups communicate as if they have a physical connection to the network
and are not limited by physical hardware connections of the LAN segments.
As a result, VLANs can define a network into various logical configurations,
such as, by application type, department or company. Trafficsegmentation
is performed at the data link level. To implement VLAN tagging on the
MSA1510i, the switch to which the MSA1510i is attached must support 802.1q
encapsulation on the uplink (trunk) port.
