HP StorageWorks 1510i Modular Smart Array iSCSI concepts and deployment guide (431338-002, July 2008)

Glossary
Alias Auser-dened name associated with the iSCSI initiator or target. The alias
allows an organization to associate a user-friendly name with the iSCSI Name.
However, the alias string is not a substitute for the iSCSI Name. The MSA1510i
CLI and SMU generate Aliases for several object, including portals, portal
groups, and mapped LUNs.
Challenge
Handshake
Authentication
Protocol (CHAP)
An authentication technique for conrming the identity of one computer to
another.
Connection A connection is a specic TCP connection within an iSCSI session between an
initiator and a target. Multiple connections can be included in a session.
Connection
Identier (CID)
A 16–bit number, generated by the initiator, that uniquely identies a connection
between two iSCSI devices. This number is presented during the logon phase.
Digests Acodeusedtoensuredataintegrityofablockofdata.TheMSA1510ihas
hardware acceleration for iSCSI CRC32 digests. Digests are typically needed
for trafc crossing a router.
FCP (Fibre Channel
Protocol
This protocol is specically for transporting SCSI commands and data across
a Fibre Channel network. Contrast this with iSCSI, which is used to transport
SCSCI commands over Internet connections.
Host Bus Adapter
(HBA)
A hardware card that plugs into a server and provides a given interface. The
term HBA is commonly used for SCSI adapters and Fibre Channel adapters.
Ethernet adapters are called Network Interface Cards (NIC).
I_T nexus A relationship between a SCSI initiator port and a SCSI target port. For iSCSI,
this relationship is a session, dened as a relationship between an iSCSI initiator
port) and the iSCSI target, along with its portal group tag. The I_T nexus can
be identied by the conjunction of the SCSI port names; that is, the I_T nexus
identier is the tuple (iSCSI Initiator Name + ,i,’+ ISID, iSCSI Target Name +
,t,’+ Portal Group Tag).
Initiator An iSCSI initiator is any entity that originates an iSCSI sesion to an iSCSI target.
Initiator Session
Identier (ISID)
A 48-bit number, generated by the initiator that uniquely identies a session
between the initiator and the target. This value is created during the login
process and is sent to the target within the Login PDU.
iSCSI Internet Small Computer System Interface a protocol for transporting SCSI
commands and data across an IP network.
iSCSI Device A SCSI device using an iSCSI service delivery subsystem. Service Delivery
Subsystem is dened as a transport mechanism for SCSI commands and
responses.
iSCSI Initiator
Node
The "initiator".
iSCSI Initiator
Name
The iSCSI Initiator Name species the worldwide unique name of the initiator.
This is typically specied using the "iqn" naming convention.
iSCSI Layer This layer builds/receives iSCSI PDUs and relays/receives them to/from one or
more TCP connections that form an initiator-to-target session.
