Initiators
In iSCSI network
ing, each server is called an initiator. As detailed in your installation documents, when
preparing each
server in the iSCSI network, plans must include installing, configuring, or assigning the
following:
• Latest operating system updates and patch kits
• 1000BaseT Ethernet network interface cards (NICs)
• iSCSI initiat
orsoftware,withanassignediSCSIqualified name (iQN) and alias
• Microsoft multipathing software (Microsoft environments only)
• Microsoft DSM for multipathing (Microsoft environments only)
For a current list of supported servers, Ethernet NICs, and operating systems, see the MSA1510i
Compatibility guide, available on the Manuals page of the MSA1510i Support website:

ttp://www.hp.com/support.
In multipat
hconfigurations, iSCSI Initiator software and the HP-approved multipath software is used to
establish t
he multiple paths to the storage. Multipathing is enabled in the iSCSI Initiator software by
performin
g multiple logins for each target via defined portals on the MSA1510i. To enable redundancy, a
logon for e
ach path/target combination must be established. For more information on configuring the
initiator
,seetheMSA1510iconfiguration notes for your operating system.
Virtual LANs (VLANs)
A virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) is a logical network, creating multiple independent workgroups
within a network. These workgroups communicate as if they have a physical connection to the network
and are not limited by physical hardware connections of the LAN segments.
At the switch, switch ports are assigned a VLAN ID, segmenting the traffic at the data link level. To
implement VLAN tagging on the MSA1510i, the switch must support 802.1q encapsulation on the uplink
(trunk) port. Not all switches support VLANs, so see the switch documentation for VLAN support and
configuration information.
When implementing VLANs on the MSA1510i, you assign these switch VLAN IDs to the network
management portal and/or network storage portals.
