Updating MSA r
mware
Firmware is a so
ftware program that resides in Read-Only Memory (ROM) on the device and is responsible
for the behavio
r of the device. As part of a routine system maintenance program, it is important to
periodically
check the rmware versions installed throughout the system, including components on the
server (opera
ting system, drivers, software tools) and other network devices, including the MSA.
Updates may in
clude additional features and functions, performance enhancements, support for newly
released hardware, or xes to known issues.
NOTE:
In a dual-controller MSA, the same version of rmware must be installed on each MSA controller.

About MSA controller rmware
Firmware is pre-installed on each MSA controller in the factory and, periodically, updated or alternative
versions of rmware may be placed on the HP website. When determining which version MSA controller

release notes, and other MSA announcements.
Determining which components to update
IMPORTANT:
Each version of MSA controller rmware is designed to work with specic Operating System versions and
patches, and multipathing (MPIO) software. Before updating your MSA controller rmware, you must
determine if any of these other components must also be updated.
Before updating any one system component, do the following to determine which other system
components must be updated at the same time.
1. Record the currently-installed versions of rmware, driver, and software components. (Table 6)
Consider using some of the following system tools to obtain this information:
Internet browser (to access some software user interfaces)
•WindowsDeviceManager
•SmartStartSurveyUtility
HP Systems Insight Manager (HP-SIM)
Network switch command line interface or management utility
System monitor startup messages
MSA command line interface
MSA controller LCD panel startup messages
2. Record the latest-available version of rmware, driver, and software components. (Table 6)
