Enterprise Volume Manager (Multi-OS) Version 2.0D Network Administration Guide

Enterprise Volume Manager (Multi-OS) Network Administration Guide 523
Configuring the EVM Network
NOTE: To install the Management Appliance with the OSM January 2002 Update, refer to the
Management Appliance Update Installation Card, AA-RNE9D-TE.
EVM Server uses the HSG Element Manager or the HSV Element Manager to
communicate with HSG-based and HSV-based storage systems. These element
managers are preinstalled on the Management Appliance and are configured to start
automatically during the appliance startup. For EVM Server V2.0D operations, the
minimum required HSG Element Manager version is included in the Management
Appliance with the OSM January 2002 Update.
The element managers must remain running at all times to allow EVM communication
with HSG-based and HSV-based storage systems. EVM recognizes and communicates
only with storage systems that are presented by these element managers. If EVM does
not display a specific storage system on the EVM Resources page, check the Element
Manager display to verify that the storage system is being presented to EVM.
NOTE: If HSVs are not present on your SAN, EVM may take up to 10 minutes to load the user
interface.
Management Appliance Service Resynchronization
The Management Appliance is configured to automatically restart the core appliance
services (not including EVM) at 3:00 AM every Sunday. One of the services restarted
is the HSG Element Manager, which EVM depends on for communication access to
the storage hardware.
When EVM detects a restart of the HSG Element Manager service, EVM
automatically enters an idle state until the HSG Element Manager service returns.
However, if an EVM job is running when this service restart occurs, this EVM job
may fail.
To prevent this type of failure, do one of the following:
Schedule all EVM jobs so that they complete before 3:00 AM Sunday.
Start all EVM jobs after 3:00 AM Sunday.
Change the time of the Management Appliance resynchronization.
Consult the Management Appliance documentation for more information.
