Fabric Watch Monitoring in a DRM Environment - Application Notes

SNMP Management Station
Application Notes Fabric Watch Monitoring in a DRM Environment 27
In order to send and receive traps, a managed object for the management application must be
configured correctly:
The managed object must have a trap destination to direct traps to the server running the
management application.
The management server must be configured to receive the traps.
The correct SNMP security must be established between the management device and the
management server, using SNMP community strings, a type of authentication. If the community
strings do not match, communication between the devices does not occur.
The management application must understand the format of the trap.
SNMP Polling
SNMP polling tasks are used to collect status information for SNMP devices. The Compaq Insight
Manager default is to collect status information once every minute. This frequency suits a network
with a small number of devices. For networks with a large number of devices (500 or more), it will be
more beneficial to run SNMP status polling less frequently (every five or ten minutes). To set up a
status polling task with the Compaq Insight Manager:
1. Click Devices from the toolbar on the Overview screen.
2. Choose Tasks from the menu.
3. You will see the SNMP Status Polling line under Polling Tasks. Click the Edit task. A Create/Edit
Task window appears.
4. In the section named Selected Query and Schedule, click the hyperlinked time interval next to
Status Polling Query. The Schedule Configuration window opens (see Figure 15).
5. Use the schedule to tell the task when to run and how often.
