SNMP Management Stations
An SNMP management station allows a SAN manager to:
• Query the MIB variable for individual fabric and switch elements
• Query and modify threshold and alarm configurations
• Receive generated SNMP traps when threshold conditions are met
• Be notified of important events
Two different management stations are mentioned briefly in this document. Compaq Insight Manager
XE is a web-based enterprise management application that communicates with SNMP agents and
displays the information on demand with a browser. Data retrieved by the agents is stored in a
database. SANworks Network View is another application that can be used to receive SNMP
messages. Network View runs on the SANworks Management Appliance by Compaq, and like
Compaq Insight Manager, can be accessed through a browser.
Web Tools
Web Tools comes installed and active on all new StorageWorks Fibre Channel SAN switches. Web
Tools provides a graphical user interface via an Ethernet connection that allows the administrator to
access and change settings more quickly than with a command line or Telnet interface.
With Web Tools you can:
• Monitor and manage the entire fabric
• Monitor and manage individual switches
• Monitor and manage individual switch ports
Web Tools provides easy access to Fabric Watch, provided the Fabric Watch license on the switch is
activated. The Web Tools GUI does not provide all the Fabric Watch configuration options that can be
obtained via Telnet, but it can be used to set most threshold parameters.
Fabric Watch Activation
Fabric Watch comes installed (but not activated) on all StorageWorks Fibre Channel SAN switches.
Each switch to be monitored in the fabric must have a Fabric Watch license installed on it to allow that
switch to be configured to poll for information. Contact your switch supplier to obtain a license key to
activate Fabric Watch.
There are two methods of activating Fabric Watch:
• Activating through Telnet
• Activating through Web Tools
Activating the License Key through Telnet
To activate Fabric Watch using Telnet commands, perform the following steps:
1. Log onto the switch by Telnet (requires that the switch be accessible using a network connection),
using an account that has administrative privileges.
2. To determine whether a Fabric Watch license is already installed on the switch, type
licenseShow on the Telnet command line. A list displays all the licenses installed on the
switch. If the Fabric Watch license is not included in the list or is incorrect, continue with step 3.
