Failure Modes
Failure of Server
If the server fails, the initiator site loses access to the storage system. To guard against this event, the
server should be part of a Microsoft cluster with another server. This allows failover of cluster groups
from one server to another server in case of a hardware component failure.
Failure of FC HBA
If the FC HBA fails, the server loses access to the storage system. To guard against this event, the
server should either be equipped with a second FC HBA or the server should be part of a Microsoft
cluster with another server. This allows failover of cluster groups from one server to another server in
case of a hardware component failure.
Failure of Cable Between Server and FC Switch
If the cable between the server and the FC switch fails, the server loses access to the storage system. To
guard against this event, the server should either be equipped with a second FC HBA or the server
should be part of a Microsoft cluster with another server. This allows failover of cluster groups from
one server to another server in case of a hardware component failure.
Failure of Local FC Switch
If the FC switch on the local site fails, all servers connected to that FC switch will lose access to the
storage system. This consequence can be mitigated by either implementing a full NSPOF
configuration (standard DRM), or by allocating the servers and host ports of the HSG80 controllers
over more than one FC switch.
