18 Application Notes – Data Replication Manager Windows-Based Server with Single Host Bus Adapter
dual-redundant
configuration
A storage subsystem configuration that consists of two active
controllers operating as a single controller. If one controller fails, the
other assumes control of the failed controller’s devices.
fabric A network of one or more Fibre Channel switches.
failsafe locked The failsafe error mode can be enabled by the user to fail any write
I/O whenever the target is inaccessible or the initiator unit fails.
When either of these conditions occurs, the remote copy set goes into
the inoperative (offline) state and the failsafe error mode is
“failsafe_locked.”
Fibre Channel (FC) A technology protocol standardized by ANSI that allows very
high-speed, switching-based serial transmissions.
Fibre Channel
Arbitrated Loop
(FC-AL)
A serial data transfer protocol developed by storage device
manufacturers and standardized by ANSI in which high bandwidth
transfer is accommodated between SANs. FC-AL supports optical
media and supports full-duplex transfer rates between SCSI storage
systems.
Fibre Channel switch A device that provides high-speed, high-bandwidth routing of data
(in Fibre Channel protocol) via link-level addressing.
frame The basic unit of communication using the Fibre Channel protocol.
Each frame consists of a payload encapsulated in control
information.
gigabit interface
converter (GBIC)
An optical to digital transceiver. The GBIC converts incoming optical
signals from the fiber optic link to equivalent electrical signals for the
device to which the fiber cable is connected, and converts electrical
signals to optical signals to be launched down the fiber.
hop The definition of an inter-switch connection. For example, there is
one hop between two cascaded switches.
host bus adapter
(HBA)
An adapter used to connect the host server to the fabric. Also called a
Fibre Channel host bus adapter.
intersite link (ISL) A fiber link between two switches. As applied to Data Replication
Manager: increasing bandwidth between switches is handled by
adding additional connections between the switches, to a maximum
of two connections.
IP address The numeric address that identifies a particular computer on an IP
network.
