3 Preparing for Continuous Access
Journa l Operations
Requirements and Restrictions
Continuous Access Journal has the following requirements and restrictions:
One-to-one volume copy operations (see One-to-One Volume Copy O perations”onpage42),
Logicalunit(LU)type(see Logical Unit (LU) Types on page 42),
Journal group (see Journal Groups on page 45),
Accessing Continuous Access Journal primary data volumes and secondar y data volumes (see
Accessing Continuous Access Journal Primary Data Volumes and Secondary Data Volumes”onpage46),
Cacheand NVS(see“Cacheand NonvolatileStorage (NVS) on page 46),
Host failover software (see Host Failover Software on page 46),
Duplicate volume (see Duplicate Volumes on page 46).
System Requirements
Continuous Access Journal o perations involve the primary storage systems and secondary storage
systems
containing the primary and secondary data volumes, the remote copy connections between the
primary storage systems and sec ondary storage systems, the host(s) at the primary and remote sites,
and
the licensed Continuous Access Journal remote console software. The Continuous Access Journal
system requirements are:
Primar
y
storage system: Storage system with Continuous Acc ess Journal installed.
Secondary storage system: Storage system with Continuous Access Journal installed.
Note:
Continuous Access Journal can coexist with TrueCopy for Mainframe in the same storage system.
Remote copy connections Fibre Channel (see
Sett
ing
up Remote Copy Connections”onpage47):
Multimode or single-mode optical bre cables are required at both the primary storage
system and secondary storage system.
•For di
stances up to 0.5 km, multimode optical shortwave ber cables are required b etween
the primary storage system and secondary storage system.
For distances from 0.5 km to 1.5 km (1,640 to 4,920 feet), multimode shortwave Fibre
Chan
nel
interface cables with up to two switches a re required.
For distance up to 10 km, single optical longwave ber cables are required between the
primary storage system and secondary storage system.
•For
distancesfrom10kmto30km(6.2to18.6miles), single-modelongwave Fibre Channel
int
erface cables with up to two switches are required.
For distances greater than 30 km (18.6 miles) , approved third-party channel extender
products and telecommunications lines are required. Long-distance Continuous Access Journal
so
lutions are provided based on user requirements and workload characteristics.
Host platforms:
The storage system supports Continuous Access Journal operations for a variety of UN IX-based
and
PC-server platforms, including HP-UX 11.0, H P-UX 11i, Sun Solaris 9, Windows 2000,
Wi
ndows 2003, and IBM AIX 5.1.
