ContinuousAccessJournal
The Continuous Access Journal feature enables you to create and maintain duplicate copies of all
user data stored on a distant HP storage system for data duplication, backup, and disaster recovery
purposes. This will enable you to recover your valuable data and protect it from a disaster, for
example, an earthquake, re, or system failure. Continuous Access Journal for UNIX or a PC ser ver
provides asynchronous copy modes to a ccommodate a wide variety of user requirements and data
copy/movement scenarios. Continuous Access Journal provides a superior hardware-based solution for
data duplication, data migration, remote copy, and disaster recovery tasks.
Continuous Access Journal operations are nondisruptive and allow the primary data volume of each
Continuous Access Journal volume pair to remain online to all hosts for both read and write I/O
operations. Once established, Continuous Access Journal continues unat tended to provide continuous,
real-time data backup. By establishing the primary data volumes and secondary data volumes on the
different storage systems, you can p erform the asynchronous operations remotely. For a Fibre Channel
connection, Continuous Access Journal op erations ca n be performed a cross distances of up to 30 km
(18.6 miles) using single -m ode longwave optical bre cables in a switch conguration.
When Continuous Access Journal is used, data to be copied will be temporarily stored in journal volumes,
whichare atypeofvolume(LU). Continuous Access Journalenables youto congure and manage
highly reliable data replication systems by using journal volumes to reduce chances of suspension of
copy operations. Copy operations can be suspended due to restrictions on data transfers from the
primary site to the secondary site.
Continuous Access Jou rnal operations can be performed in conjunction with HP StorageWorks XP Business
Copy operations (see Business Copy a nd ShadowImage for Mainframe on page 16) to provide
multiple internalcopiesofContinuousAccessJournal volumes. Continuous Access Journalalsosupports
the
HP StorageWorks X P Virtual LVI/LUN and HP StorageWorks XP Cache Residency Manager features
of the storage system, so that Continuous Access Journal meets a variety of user ne eds and facilitates
data copying and data migration. See Interoperability with Other Products and Functions”onpage50
for further information on combining Continuous Access Journal with these and other data manag em ent
features.

information a nd allows you to congure and perform Continuous Access Journal operations. The Remote
Web Console soft ware communicates with the SVP of the storage system via dened TCP/IP connections.
In the
event of a system failure or disaster at the primary site, the Remote Web Console software also
simplies and expedites disaster recovery procedures.
This document describes and provides instructions for performing Continuous Access Journal operations
using the licensed Remote Web Console software. Continuous Access Journal operations can also be
performed from the UNIX or PC-server host using the HP StorageWorks XP RAID Manager software
product. For information and instructions on using RAID M anager to perform Continuous Access Journal
operations, see the HP StorageWorks XP RAID Manager User’s Guide. Thisuser'sguide does notcover
