HP StorageWorks XP24000 Continuous Access Software User and Reference Guide, v01 (T5278-96002, June 2007)

2 Preparing for Continuous Access
Operations
System Requirements
Continuous Access operations involve the storage system MCUs and RCUs containing the primary and
secondary volumes, the remote copy connections between the MCUs and RCUs, the host(s) at the
primary and remote sites, and the licensed Continuous Access software.
Note:
Continuous Access can coexist with TrueCopy for Mainframe (all copy modes) in the same
storage system.
The Continuous Access system requirements are:
MCU: storage system with Continuous Access installed by using a license code.
Note:
For
information on performing remote copy using a non-storage system model as an MCU, see the
HP StorageWorks XP24000 Continuous Access Software User and Reference Guide for the
non-storage system models.
Note:
For important information about proper cong uration for your operational environment, see
Continuous Access Load Balancing and Sidele Management and Control”onpage143.
RCU: Storage system with Continuous Access installed by using a license code.
Note:
Amodel
other
than the storage system can also be used as an RCU connected to a storage system MCU.
For assistance with mixed storage system congurations, contact your HP service representative.
Note:
The storage systems may have additional installation re quirements (for example, system
option mo d es, DKC-F510I-32FS2, DKC-F51 5I-M IX2). For information on system option modes
for Continuous Access, see Storage Systems on page 14.
Host platforms: The storage system supports Continuous Access o p erations for a variety of
UNIX-based and PC-server platforms, including the Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, HP-UX, Windows NT,
and
Windows 2000 platforms. Please contact your HP suppor t representative fo r the latest
information on storage system platform support for Continuous Access.
Remote co py conn ec tio ns Fibre Channel:
Multimode or single-mode optical bre cables are required a t both the MCU and RCU.
For distances from 0.5 km to 1.5 km (1,640 to 4,920 feet), multimode shortwave Fibre
Channel
interface cables with up to two switches are required.
For distancesfrom10kmto30km(6.2to18.6miles), single-modelongwave Fibre Channel
interface cables with up to two switches are required.
For distances greater than 30 km, approved third-party channel extender products and
telecommunications lines are required.
Note:
All Fibre Channel remote copy activities bet ween t wo storage systems (that is,
Continuous Access Synchronous and Asynchronous, TrueCopy f or Mainframe Synchronous
and
Asynchronous) can share the same remote copy c onnections.
Remote Web Console software and Continuous Access license code(s):
•The Remote Web Console software is required for storage system Continuous Access
operations. The Continuous Access software is a component of the Remote Web Console
product.
•The Continuous Access license key code(s) are required to enable the Continuous Access
option(s) on the storage system (see Enabling Continuous Access Options”onpage49).
Separate license codes are required for each storage system.
Note:
Administrator or Continuous Access write access to the Remote Web Console sof tware is
required to perform Continuous Access operations. Users without Administrator or Continuous
Access write access can only view Continuous Access information.
