HP StorageWorks XP24000 Continuous Access Software User and Reference Guide, v01 (T5278-96002, June 2007)
For further information on Virtual LVI/LUN (VLL), see the H P StorageWorks XP24000 Virtual LVI/LUN (VLL)
and Volume Shredder User’s Guide.
Cache Residenc
y
Manager
The volumes that are applied using Cache Residency Manager can be assigned to Continuous Access
pairs, and Cache Residency Manager operations can be performed on Continuous Access P-VOLs
and S-VOLs.
For further in
formation on Cache Residency Manager, see the HP StorageWorks XP24000 Cache
Residency Manager User’s Guide.
LUN Manager
LUN Ma n ager operations do not affect Continuous Access operations. Volumes which are under secure
ports and/or assigned to host groups can also be assigned to Continuous Access pairs. Volumes which
are assigned to Continuous Access pairs can also be assigned to secure ports or host groups for LUN
Manager.
For further information on LUN Manager, see the HP StorageWorks XP24000 LUN M anager User’s Guide.
Note:
Continuous Access S-VOLs cannot be accessed by a UNIX/PC server host except when the
pair is split.
HP Storage
Works XP Performance Monitor
The Perfor
mance
Monitor soft ware provides detailed information on the I/O activity and hardware
performance of the storage systems. Performance M onitor can be used to monitor the storage systems
which will be (or already are) per forming Continuous Access operations. The storage system usage and
performance data collected and displayed by Performance Monitor enables you to:
• Identify the optimum timings to perform Continuous Access data duplexing o p erations (for
example, during periods of light system I/O activity) ,
• Determi
ne the
best locations for the Continuous Access S-VOLs (for example, in parity groups with
less fr
equently accessed volumes to avoid bottlenecks of backend activity) ,
• Monitor storage system performance during Continuous Access opera tions and du ring testing
activi ties.
Perfor
mance Monitor data collection does not affect storage system operations in any way. However,
Perfo
rmance Monitor data collection can cause a significant amount of trafficonthe storage system
inter
nal LAN, especially when Performance Monitor is collecting a large amount of LDEV data. To
preve
nt
timeouts from occurring while you are performing Continuous Access (or other) operations on the
Remo
te Web Console computer, you may want to decrease the Per formance Monitor data collection
activities before using the other storage system program products. This reduces the storage system’s
internal LAN traffic, so that inquiries and commands issued by the Remote We b Console computer can
be
processed more quickly.
For f
urther information on Per formance Monitor, see the HP StorageWorks XP24000 Per formance
Monitor User’s Guide.
To perform Continuous Access (or other) operations while Performance Monitor is collecting data for one
or
m
ore stora g e systems on the same storage system internal LAN:
1. If P
erformance Monitor is collecting a large amount of LDEV data, consider disabling
Pe
rformance Monitor LDEV data collection for one or more storage systems before using the
ot
her storage system program products. Please see the HP StorageWorks XP24000 Performance
Mo
nitor User’s Guide for instructions on d isabling LDEV data collection.
2
.
I
f
Performance Monitor is collecting data for m ore than three storage systems on the storage
s
ystem internal LAN, consider disconnecting Performance Monitor from one or more
s
torage systems before using the other storage system program products. Please see the HP
StorageWorks XP24000 Performance Monitor User’s Guide for instructions on disconnecting
Performance Monitor.
