HP StorageWorks XP24000 Continuous Access Software User and Reference Guide, v01 (T5278-96002, June 2007)
Figure 1 on page 14 shows the Continuous Access components and their functions:
• Storage systems
Note:
The additional Shared Memory option is required for Continuous Access operations.
• Main and remote control units (MCU and RCU)
• Pairs (P-VOLs and S-VOLs)
• Continuous Access Asynchronous consistency groups
• Remote copy connections
• Ordinary target ports, initiator ports, and RCU target ports for the Fibre Channel interface
• Storage system’s Continuous Access software
• Host failover software

Systems
Continuous Access operations involve the primary (main) storage systems and the secondary (rem ote)
storage systems (MCUs and RCUs). This document covers Continuous Access operations in which the

Disk
Array (or an HP XP12000 Disk array). The MCUs contain the Continuous Access primary volumes
(P-VOLs), which contain the original data and are online to the host(s). The RCUs contain the Continuous
Access secondary volumes (S-VOLs), which are the synchronous or asynchronous copies of the P-VOLs.
Conti
nuous Access supports all CUs, volumes, and hard disk drive options for the storage system.
