1 About HP StorageWorks XP
Con t inuous Access Software
Operations
Continuous Access provides a storage-based hardware solution for disaster recovery that enables fast
and
accurate system recovery. O nc e Continuous Access operations are established, duplicate copies of
data are automatically maintained for backup and disaster recovery purposes. During normal Continuous
Access operations, the primary volumes remain online to a ll hosts and continue to process both read and
write I/O operations. In the event of a disaster or system failure, the secondar y copy of the data can be
rapidly invoked to allow recovery with a very high level of data integrity. Continuous Access can also be
used for data duplication and migra tion tasks.
HP StorageWorks XP Continuous Access Synchronous Software provides volume-based, real-time d ata
backup and is ideal for high-priority data backup, duplication, and migration tasks. In the event of a
disaster or system failure at the primary site, the secondary Continuous Access Synchronous da ta c a n be
rapidly invoked to allow recovery at the volume level with an extremely high level of data integrity.
HP StorageWorks XP Continuous Access Asynchronous Software represents a u nique and outstanding
disaster recovery solution for large amounts of data that span multiple volumes. The Continuous Access
Asynchronous gro up-based update sequence consistency solution enables fast a nd accurate database
recovery, even after a rolling disaster, without the need for time-consuming data recovery procedures.
The Continuous Access A synchronous volume groups at the remote site can b e recovered with full update
sequence consistency, but the updates will be b ehind the primary site due to the asynchronous remote
copy operations.
Continuous Access Asynchronous provides update sequence consistency for user-defined groups of
volumes (for example, large databases) as well as protection for write-dependent applications in the
ev ent of a disaster.
This overview of Continuous Access operations describes:
•
Continuous Access c omponents (see “Continuous Access Components”onpage13)
•
Continuous Access operations (see “Continuous Access Remote Copy Operations” on page 18)
• Continuous Access Asynchronous recordset operations (see
“Continuous Access Asynchronous Recordset Operations”onpage22)
• Continuous Access Asynchronous consistency group operations (see
“Continuous Access Asynchronous Consistency Group Operations” on page 25)
•
Continuous Access pair status and split/suspend t ypes (see “Pair Status” on page 27)
• Interoperability with other products and functions (see
“Interoperability with Other Products and Functions”onpage32)
Continuous Access Components
Continuous Access operations involve the storage systems at the primary and secondary (remote) sites,
the
physical communications paths between these storage systems, and the storage system’s Continuous
Ac
cess software. Continuous Access copies the original online data at the primary site to the offline
backup volumes at the secondary (remote) site via the dedicated Fibre Channel remote copy connections.
The Continuous Access software is included in the HP StorageWorks XP Remote Web Console Java
application, and all Continuous Access functions and operations can be performed from within a web
b
rowser.
Note:
Host failover software is required for effective disaster recovery with Continuous Access.
