HP P6000 Replication Solutions Manager Administrator Guide (T3680-96069, June 2012)
Glossary
This glossary defines terms that are used in this guide or are related to the software.
A
allocation policy Storage system rules that govern how virtual disks are created. Demand allocated and Fully
allocated are the two rules used in creating virtual disks.
• Fully allocated–The space a virtual disk requires on the physical disks is reserved, even if
the virtual disk is not currently using the space.
• Demand allocated–The space a virtual disk requires on the physical disks is not reserved
until needed.
array A synonym of storage array, storage system, and virtual array. A group of disks in one or more
disk enclosures combined with controller software that presents disk storage capacity as one or
more virtual disks.
array-based
management
A management structure in which HP P6000 Command View is installed on the management
module within the controller enclosure.
asynchronous A term used to describe computing models that eliminate timing dependencies between sequential
processes. For example, in asynchronous replication, data is written to the source and the write
is considered complete before the data is copied to the destination.
See also synchronous.
C
cache High-speed memory that sets aside data as an intermediate data buffer between a host and the
storage media. The purpose of the cache is to improve performance.
client An intelligent device that requests services from other intelligent devices. In the context of P6000
software, a client is a computer used to access the software remotely using a supported browser.
consistency group A collection of related virtual disks against which operations should be performed together
(consistently).
D
DBA Data base administrator.
DHCP Dynamic host configuration protocol.
DLE Dynamic LUN Expansion.
DNS Domain name system.
DR group Data replication group. A logical group of virtual disks in a remote replication relationship with
a corresponding group on another array.
E
enabled host A host that is equipped with a replication manager host agent.
Enterprise Virtual
Array
An HP product that consists of one or more virtual arrays.
See also virtual array.
EVA Enterprise Virtual Array.
F
fabric A network of Fibre Channel switches or hubs and other devices.
failover The process that occurs when one device assumes the workload of a failed companion device.
Failovers can be planned or unplanned.
Fibre Channel A data transfer architecture designed for mass storage devices and other peripheral devices that
require high bandwidth.
