4.0.0 HP PolyServe Software for Windows File Serving administration guide (T5392-96047, March 2010)
Mac SMB clients
A software update for Mac SMB clients is available at this Web site:
www.admitmac.com.
Name resolution
Virtual CIFS Server deployments work with FQDN (DNS resolution) or IP address,
but do not work with NetBIOS name resolution of non-qualified NetBIOS names
(including WINS and NetBT broadcasts). If clients will be using non-qualified NetBIOS
names, you must use Matrix File Shares and DFS load balancing for high availability,
instead of the Virtual CIFS Server deployment method.
NOTE:
By default, NetBIOS name resolution order is used on clients if the name does not
contain a dot. If the name does contain a dot, hostname resolution order is used.
Also, if DNS resolution fails because of improper network or DNS setup, during host
name resolution the client will resort to NetBIOS name resolution methods including
WINS and NetBT broadcasts, which could result in incorrect name resolution for
VFS names.
User authentication and security
Matrix Server uses Windows credentials to authorize access to the matrix. By default,
members of the machine local Administrators group have access to the matrix and
can perform all matrix operations, including HP PolyServe Software operations. If
desired, the Matrix Server Role-Based Security Control Panel can be used to create
a role specifically for file-sharing operations. See the HP PolyServe Matrix Server
administration guide for more information.
Matrix Server requires that Active Directory be configured. See the “Administrative
Considerations and Restrictions” section of the HP PolyServe Matrix Server
administration guide for more information.
HP PolyServe Software for Windows File Serving sets share-level permissions to
EVERYONE:FULL_CONTROL. The administrator should set permissions on the
filesystem to control access to data instead of setting permissions at the share level.
