Considerations for Using DFS
WhenusingDFSwithHPPolyServeSoftware,youshouldbeawareofthe
following:
•Westronglyrecommendthatdomain‐basedDFSbeused.Stand‐alone
DFSdoesnotprovidefaulttoleranceonroot.
•SharescreatedonaPSFSfilesy stemanddeployedviaDFSmustbe
underthecontrolofMatrixServer.Use
onlyMatrixFileShares;they
aredesignedtoworkproperlywithDFSandHP PolyServeSoftware.
Thefollowingshouldnotbeused:
–CIFSsharescreatedwithotherWindowsapplications.These
shareswillnotbeunderHPPolyServeSoftwarecontrol.
–VirtualCIFSServers.Thesevirtualserversarenotcompatiblewith
DFS.
•Matrix
FileSharesmustbecreatedbeforeyousetupDFS.(See“A d d a
MatrixFileShare”onpage9.)
DFS Setup
AfteryouhavecreatedtheappropriateMatrixFileShares,completethe
followingstepstosetupDFS:
1. OpentheDFSMMCsnap‐inunder“AdministrativeTools.”Createa
“domain‐based”DFSroot,dfsroot,inActiveDirectory.ADFSroot
targetcanbeonaPSFSfilesystem;however,itmustbea
different
path/sharethanthelink.(Whencreatingtheroot,youwillneedtouse
driveletters;attemptstousemountpointswillfail.)Thencreate“root
targets”pointingtoaCIFSshare(forexample,Y:\dfsrootsharedas
\\clust1‐3\dfsroot).Eachservershouldhaveatargetpointingtothe
samelocation
onthePSFSfilesystem.
2. Adda“NewLink”calledfoo.Thenadd\\clust1\foo1,\\clust2\foo1,
and\\clust3\foo1aslinktargets.
