1. Install SuSE Linux Enterprise Server Version 9

SuSE Linux Enterprise Server Version 9 must be installed on each server

in the matrix. Following are some considerations for the installation.

• Do not place any operating-system files on the SAN disks. To ensure

that files are not installed on these disks, you can either unplug the

HBA card from the FC switch or unplug the SAN connection before

starting the installation. After booting the server on SuSE Linux, plug

the HBA card back into the FC switch or restore the SAN connection.

• If you will be installing a firewall, ensure that the service ports

required by Matrix Server are open. See the PolyServe Matrix Server

Administration Guide for more information about the service ports

used by Matrix Server.

• Matrix Server requires that the following packages be installed. (The

packages are included in the “default” server installation.)

– glibc 2.3.2 or higher

– net-snmp 5.0.8 or higher

– openssl 0.9.7a or higher

– e2fsprogs 1.32 or higher

– bind-utils 9.2.2 or higher

–procmail

• If you will be building the kernel from source, be sure to install the gcc

compiler. (If you want to install the MxFS-Linux Solution Pack or the

PolyServe kernel patch, you will need to build the kernel from source.

Otherwise, you can use the binary kernel.)

• If you will be installing MxFS-Linux, remove the yast2-nfs-server RPM

if it has been installed. This software conflicts with the MxFS-Linux

configuration scheme.

2. Install a Supported Kernel

The following SLES9 kernels are supported: 2.6.5-7.244 and 2.6.5-7.252.

To check your current kernel version, run the following command:

# uname -rv
