Install a SQL Server 2000 Service Pack
This procedure can be used to install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 and
higher. Service Pack 4 is required.
NOTE: If Service Pack 3 is not already installed, an unattended
installation of Service Pack 4 will fail. You will need to first install
Service Pack 3 and then install Service Pack 4. This is a known
Microsoft issue.
NOTE: Be sure to put any virtualized SQL instances into maintenance
mode before attempting to patch them.
Service Pack Names
The installation procedure expects the names of SQL Server service packs
to follow the standardized naming schema defined in the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842960
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822499
The installation will fail if the name of a service pack has been changed
and it no longer matches the appropriate schema.
Create an Answer File for Service Pack 4 Only
With SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4, Microsoft no longer includes
pre-defined set-up initialization (.iss) files. (These files are also called
answer files.) However, the user is still required to have an answer file for
any unattended installations.
To supply an answer file for the Service Pack 4 installation, copy the
answer file (sql2kdef.iss) for Service Pack 3 from the sp3 folder to the sp4
folder. You can then install Service Pack 4 using the Install SQL window.
Copy the Service Pack Files
Copy the Service Pack files to a PSFS filesystem. On the Install SQL
window, select MSSQL 2000 Service Pack as the product.
