Critical Patc h Update
Each quarter Oracle issues a critical patch. These instructions are for installing Oracle Patch 21, which
includes the Oracle April 2008 critical patch update and some additional software fixes.
IMPORTANT:
• HP Storage Essentials SRM is unavailable when installing the Oracle April 2008 CPU. Plan a
non-peak time to implement these steps.
• The installation of the Oracle April 2008 patch fails on Windows servers when the user name is root.
To install the Oracle April 2008 critical patch update:
NOTE:
The script for installing the April 2008 CPU does not run if its directory path contains spaces, for example
/my patch/runCPUApr2008.cmd.
1. Expor t your database by using the Export Backup feature in the Da tabase Admin Utilit y. This export

d in case an issue occurs during the April 2008 CPU update.

Utility. T
he HP Storage Essentials SRM User Guide is accessible from the Documentation Center on
the HP Sto
rage Essentials management server. You will later need to use the Cold Backup feature
in the Database Admin Utility while the HP Storage Essentials management server is not running.
You cannot access the Documentation Center when the HP Storage Essentials management server
is not run
ning. It is recommended you save the User Guide to another location so you can easily
accessitwhenyouneedtodoaColdBackup.
IMPORTANT:
YouwillneedtostoptheAppstorManagerservicebeforeyoucanruntheDatabaseAdminUtility.The
AppStorManager service will sometimes hang if you try to stop it. If you have difficulties with stopping
AppStor
Manager, set the service to Manual and then r eboot the server.
2. Create a folder to contain the content of the zip archive, and name this new folder patch21.
3. Extract the content of the zip archive to patch21 folder.
4. Launchacommandlinewindowandmakepatch21 the current working subdirectory .
5. You must stop the following services if they are running:
NOTE:
Some of these services do not appear on all servers.
• the Oracle instances
• the Oracle management ser ver
• the Oracle TNSListener
•TheHTTPserver
