HP StorageWorks SmartStart EVA Storage 2.1 release notes (T5505-96019, December 2008)

HP Command View EVA implementation
HP Command View EVA can be implemented in two ways:
Server-based management—HP Command View EVA is installed on a management server con-
nected to the EVA, providing management of multiple HP EVA storage systems. All components
of the software suite (HP Command View EVA, HP Command View EVAPerf, HP Storage System
Scripting Utility, SMI-S EVA) are installed. Server-based management is applicable to all EVA
models.
Array-based management—Beginning with HP Command View EVA 8.1, the EVA4400 is shipped
with HP Command View EVA pre-installed on the management module within the controller en-
closure. Only one component of the software suite (HP Command View EVA) is installed. Array-
based management is applicable to the EVA4400 only.
If you plan to use array-based management, you do not need HP SmartStart EVA Storage to configure
a management server. You can still use it to configure any non-management server attached to the
array. To complete the array configuration for array-based management, see "Completing the array
configuration" in the HP StorageWorks Command View EVA user guide. This section will guide you
through starting HP Command View EVA and initializing the array.
Storage arrays not displaying in HP Command View EVA
If the management server is running Microsoft Windows 2003 and has Emulex 8 Gb/s HBAs installed,
HP Command View EVA 8.x may not display any arrays. To resolve this issue, you must install a
Microsoft hotfix. Go to the following link for details and the hotfix download:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945119
The title of the issue on the Microsoft site is: Stop error that is related to the Storport.sys driver on a
Windows Server 2003-based computer: "0x000000D1 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3,
parameter4) DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"
This issue only occurs if Emulex 8 Gb/s HBAs (HP part numbers AJ762A and AJ763A) and HP
Command View EVA 8.x are installed on the management server. If you are using the server for
storage only, not as a management server, you do not need to install this hotfix.
Allow HP Command View EVA time to gather information after a reboot
When HP SmartStart EVA Storage initiates a server reboot, HP Command View EVA and HP SmartStart
EVA Storage restart automatically. It is possible for you to advance through the HP SmartStart EVA
Storage application dialog boxes before all configuration information is available. Be sure to wait a
minute to allow HP Command View EVA to gather the requisite storage array information before
proceeding. Otherwise, you may need to return to the main menu and restart HP SmartStart EVA
Storage.
Troubleshooting the HP VDS Hardware Provider installation
When using HP SmartStart EVA Storage to provision storage to your server, you may receive the
following error:
The HP VDS Hardware Provider may not be installed properly.
If the installation of the VDS Hardware Provider was successful, review the possible causes listed
below (in the order shown) and follow the steps to resolve the error.
Cause 1: The Virtual Disk Service (VDS) is not starting as expected.
