HP Smart Update Best Practices Planning Guide
NOTE: HP SUM does not perform updates when it generates a report.
3. Determine the update installation order.
• If you have not updated your servers recently, and are using Smart Update Firmware
DVD 9.30 or earlier (with HP SUM 4.2.1 or earlier).
The order is based on whether or no an operating system is installed and which VC
firmware version is installed.
◦ If the VC firmware is earlier than 1.34, update the VC, the OA, and then the blades.
◦ If the VC firmware is 1.34 or later:
Without an operating system, the installation order is blade infrastructure (for
example, OA or VC), and then blades (offline).
–
– With an operating system, update the OA, blades (offline or online), and then
the VC.
◦ With VC firmware greater than 3.00, you must install OA firmware 3.00 first.
◦ HP Integrity BL8x0 i2 blades require OA firmware greater than 3.00.
• If you are using the SPP to update your enclosure.
Using HP SPPs (HP SUM 5.0.0 or later and online FC HBA/CNA firmware updates)
◦ The order is based on whether or not an operating system is installed and the VC
firmware version.
– If you are using VC firmware earlier than 1.34, OA and/or blades can be
updated concurrently.
– If you are using VC firmware 1.34 or later:
– Without an operating system, the order is blade infrastructure (OA or VC),
and then the blades (offline).
– With an operating system, update the OA, and then the blades (online)
and VC concurrently.
– With VC firmware greater than 3.00, you must install OA firmware 3.00 first.
– HP Integrity BL8x0 i2 blades require OA firmware greater than 3.00.
NOTE: If you are updating HP Integrity servers, HP SUM automatically
determines the order of updates through HP Integrity iLO, VC, and OA.
WARNING! There is the possibility for the loss of LAN or VC connectivity on HP Integrity
BL870c i2 or BL890c i2 when running a combination of VC firmware version 3.18, 3.17
3.15 and OA firmware version 3.20 or 3.21. For more information, see the Known Issues in
HP Virtual Connect Version 3.18 Release Notes on the HP website at http://

4. Schedule a phased update approach. You might have to perform partial updates to the
enclosure if all servers cannot be updated at the same time. Even if you have to perform partial
updates, maintain the same installation order.
5. Perform the update. For update instructions, see the HP Smart Update Best Practices Implementer
Guide.
