HP Smart Update Best Practices Overview

4 Performing the updates
The high-level steps for updating your servers are:
1. Create baselines and rollback plans. For more information, see the HP Smart Update Best
Practices Planning Guide. This helps you determine both the updates to apply and the servers
and targets to update.
2. Create an update plan:
a. Determine your baseline versions and how often you want to update the baselines.
b. Determine how you will handle hot fixes (HP ProLiant servers) and new HP Integrity
bundles.
c. Determine the process for deploying the updates.
d. Test the process on a single enclosure or server.
3. Download the appropriate SPP or Integrity bundle from the HP SPP website http://
www.hp.com/go/spp or HP Integrity website http://www.hp.com/go/smartupdate/integrity.
4. Review your change management policy and ensure you have a test environment in place.
This allows you to make sure the proposed changes can be rolled out to the update plan.
5. Run HP SUM to generate a report of installed firmware for all targets.
6. Batch servers according to model, firmware version, operating system, and other variables.
7. Define incremental updates required for the servers and other targets. For more information,
see the HP Smart Update Best Practices Planning Guide.
8. Make sure all hot fixes and critical advisories for the server are applied. For more information,
see the Critical Updates section of the HP Smart Update Best Practices Planning Guide.
9. Check the list of driver dependencies. For more information, see the HP Smart Update Best
Practices Planning Guide.
10. Identify one batch of servers, and then update one server in the batch as a test. Allow this
server to run for 72 hours before updating the remaining servers in the batch.
11. Follow the recommended installation order. For more information, see the HP Smart Update
Best Practice Implementer Guide.
12. Verify the installation.
13. Gather logs. For more information, see the HP Smart Update Best Practice Implementer Guide.
14. Troubleshoot problems.
