HP Serviceguard Oracle DataGuard Toolkit User Guide, April 2011

1 Introduction
HP Serviceguard Toolkit for Oracle Data Guard (ODG) helps in easy integration of ODG with HP
Serviceguard. ODG is the host-based, data-replication software for Oracle Database. It provides
management, monitoring, and automation features to create and maintain one or more standby
databases protecting data from failures, disasters, human error, and data corruptions. To provide
High Availability (HA) so that data replication continues in the face of failures, ODG can be
deployed in a Serviceguard cluster.
Overview
The Serviceguard Toolkit for Oracle Data Guard consists of a set of shell scripts that are used to
start, stop, and monitor Oracle Data Guard primary and standby database instances.
Data Guard provides a comprehensive set of services that create, maintain, manage, and monitor
one or more standby databases. This is to help Oracle databases survive disasters and data
corruption. Data Guard maintains these standby databases as consistent copies of the production
database. If the production database is unavailable in case of a planned or unplanned outage,
Data Guard can allow any standby database to take over in the production role, thus reducing
the downtime associated with the outage. Data Guard can be used with traditional backup,
restoration, and cluster techniques to provide a high level of data protection and data availability.
A Data Guard configuration consists of one production database, known as the primary database,
and up to nine standby databases.
ODG protects Oracle Database by replicating the data to one or more standby databases.
Integrating Oracle Data Guard with HP Serviceguard has the following advantages:
Provides high availability for Data Guard processes, for both primary and the standby
databases. HP Serviceguard includes built-in monitoring capabilities to check system resources
like network, volume groups, files systems, and so on, and also to initiate failover in the instant
of their failure.
ODG allows integration to Metrocluster and Continentalclusters.
ODG integration with HP Serviceguard Extended Distance Cluster or other Serviceguard based
clusters, will provide disaster protection and recovery for Oracle database as well as the
applications that use the databases.
