New Preview Capabilities
Many variables affect package placement, including the availability of cluster nodes;
the availability of networks and other resources on those nodes; failover and failback
policies; and package weights, dependencies, and priorities, if you have configured
them. You can preview the effect on packages of certain actions or events before they
actually occur.
Serviceguard A.11.19 provides two ways to do this: you can use the preview mode
(-t) of Serviceguard commands, or you can use the cmeval (1m) command to simulate
different cluster states. Alternatively, you might want to model changes to the cluster
as a whole; cmeval allows you to do this.
For more information, see “Previewing the Effect of Cluster Changes” in Chapter 7 of
Managing Serviceguard.
Package Maintenance Mode
NOTE: For information about legacy and modular packages, see Chapter 6 of Managing
Serviceguard.
With the patches listed under “July 2009 Patches” (page 11) Serviceguard A.11.19
allows you to perform maintenance on a modular, failover package while the package
is running. This is called maintenance mode. The package must have package switching
disabled before you can place it in, or take it out, of maintenance mode.
This capability is not yet supported by Serviceguard Manager; you must use the
command line as shown in “Maintaining a Package” in Chapter 7 of the latest version
of Managing Serviceguard. See also “Current Limitations of Serviceguard Manager”
(page 33).
CAUTION: No package can be in maintenance mode, whether it is running or not,
when you perform an upgrade from Serviceguard A.11.19 to any later version, including
an upgrade from the initial release of A.11.19 to the July 2009 patch.
This means that:
• You must make sure no packages are in maintenance mode when you start the
upgrade.
• You must not put any package in maintenance mode until all the nodes have been
upgraded.
Breaking this rule will leave the cluster in an inconsistent state. To recover, you will
need to halt the cluster and then upgrade all the nodes.
When a package is in maintenance mode, you have two options:
