Serviceguard NFS Toolkit A.11.31.08 Release Notes (5900-1483, March 2011)
Serviceguard NFS Toolkit Overview
HP Serviceguard Network File Server (NFS) Toolkit uses HP Serviceguard to set up highly available
NFS servers.
You must set up a Serviceguard cluster before you can set up Highly Available (HA) NFS.
Serviceguard NFS Toolkit is a separately purchased set of configuration files and control script,
which you can customize for your specific needs.
An NFS server is a host that exports its local directories and makes them available for client hosts
to mount using NFS. On the NFS client, these mounted directories look to users like part of the
client's local file system. With HP Serviceguard NFS Toolkit, the NFS server package containing
the exported file systems can move to a different node in the cluster in the event of failure. After
Serviceguard starts the NFS package on the adoptive node, the NFS file systems are re-exported
from the adoptive node with minimum disruption of services to users. When the service returns,
the user can continue access to the file.
Announcement
Serviceguard NFS Toolkit A.11.31.08 supports both legacy and modular package configurations
with HP Serviceguard A.11.18 and later versions. The support for legacy and modular package
configurations is available for serviceguard clusters configured with both VxFS (non-CFS) and
Veritas Cluster File System (CFS). In a CFS environment, all nodes in the Serviceguard cluster can
concurrently access the files in the CFS. The NFS servers in the cluster can concurrently access and
export directories in the CFS. As a result, CFS enables NFS clients (typically located outside the
cluster) to concurrently use multiple NFS servers to access files. If an NFS server or a package fails,
the adoptive nodes do not have to mount disks from the failed system, since the disks are already
mounted on the adoptive node. This feature provides improved performance, scalability, and
availability.
Serviceguard NFS Toolkit A.11.31.08 contains defect fixes. For information about these defect
fixes, see “New Fixes in Version A.11.31.08” (page 5)
For more information about how to configure the NFS modular package in a VxFS (non-CFS)
environment, see the Serviceguard NFS Toolkit A.11.11.06, A.11.23.05 and A.11.31.08
Administrator's Guide. To access this document, go to the HP-UX Serviceguard manuals page at:
www.hp.com/go/hpux-serviceguard-docs
On this page, select HP Serviceguard NFS Toolkit.
For more information about how to configure the NFS modular package in a Veritas CFS
environment, see the Serviceguard NFS Toolkit Support for Cluster File System White Paper available
at the same location.
NOTE: Support for Serviceguard NFS Legacy Packages will be completely withdrawn in the
future. Use the modular method to create new packages whenever possible.
Limitations
Following are the limitations of using Serviceguard NFS Toolkit A.11.31.08 with Serviceguard
A.11.18 and later versions and CFS:
• Lock coherency for multiple NFS servers is not supported. NFS file lock coherency is not
supported when multiple NFS servers are concurrently accessing a file. Lock operations do
not return an error, but lock coherency is not guaranteed. This may cause data corruption or
cause an application to hang.
• Cross mounting using the nfs_xmnt script is not supported, since CFS provides file sharing
functionality within the cluster.
• Secure NFS is not supported when using Serviceguard with CFS.
