HP-UX and Linux Serviceguard Cluster Manageability, June 2007

Differences between HP Serviceguard Manager stand-alone and
functional area versions
The version of Serviceguard that is running on your network will influence whether you will use the
Serviceguard Manager stand-alone or functional area. See the Serviceguard release notes or the
Serviceguard Manager support matrix at
http://docs.hp.com for version support for your specific
environment. The following table compares the functional area and stand-alone versions.

The following use case scenarios illustrate different cluster management options.
Single cluster management with Serviceguard
Administration of a Serviceguard version A.11.17.01 cluster can be done using Serviceguard
Manager functional area through HP SMH or using the Serviceguard Manager stand-alone.
Using Serviceguard Manager functional area, you can create and manage Serviceguard 11.17.01
and later clusters. With the functional area, you have easy access from a web browser using the
following URL: http://<fullhostname of a cluster node>:2301. When using HP SMH
functional areas such as Serviceguard Manager, you also have the advantage of HP SMH roles
based access. This access makes overall administration easier. In addition to HP SMH role-based
access, you can add an additional level of security with Serviceguard roles that combine with HPSMH
roles as in the following examples. If a logged in user has HP SMH Administrator access, they will
have full cluster management capabilities. A user with HP SMH Operator access will be able to
monitor the cluster and will have restricted cluster management capabilities as defined by the user’s
Serviceguard role-based access configuration. A user with only HP SMH User access will not have
any cluster management capabilities.
Using Serviceguard Manager stand-alone, a user can create and manage Serviceguard clusters
versions A.11.16 through A.11.17.01. Cluster management capabilities are determined solely on the
access control policies set in Serviceguard.
