Executive summary HP understands that designing and building a robust highly-available infrastructure for your Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) Applications is key to a successful implementation. Several approaches can be taken when building resilient systems with EBS and this paper outlines an approach using Serviceguard extension for EBS (SGeEBS) to integrate with HP Serviceguard (Serviceguard) on HP Integrity servers running HP-UX.

Configuring EBS for SGeEBS SGeEBS is designed to avoid the need for custom modifications of EBS configuration files, application code, or AutoConfig generate scripts. This will ensure that as future EBS configuration and patching processes are carried out, no unexpected surprises are met.

In Figure 1 as an example, we see that the database can either run on server sg-serv1 or server sg-serv2. However, the database listener is not configured to bind to either the sg-serv1 or sg-serv2 network endpoints, but rather to the alias of “ebsdatabase” which is the associated virtual hostname for the database. It is this “ebsdatabase” alias which is mapped to the floating IP alias address that Serviceguard will manage during the database Serviceguard package startup.

Having a single shared storage area for APPS tier filesystem and instance-specific information can be particularly useful should an EBS instance fail for some unexpected reason. When a failure occurs, Serviceguard will automatically execute a failover of the APPS tier to the alternate node which includes moving the shared storage from the failed server to the operational system.

EBS as Serviceguard package SGeEBS requires EBS to be configured as two Serviceguard packages, a DB tier package and an APPS tier package, SGeEBS provides two different set of scripts to configure DB and APPS tier package. Each set is composed of required scripts with functions to start, stop, and monitor the respective tier. The package configuration file declares the preferred nodes, disks/volume groups, and subnets that the package will use.

The DB package should know the name of the APPS package and vice versa. The proper sequence of starting the EBS packages is DB first and then APPS.

The APPS package will remain in this state for 10 iterations of the monitoring loop. For a monitoring interval of 30 seconds, this will result in a maximum time of 5 minutes. If the DB package returns to the running state within this time interval, the APPS Tier will reestablish JDBC connection with the DB Tier and both the packages will continue to run in normal state. This feature helps end users of APPS to retain their http connections during failover of the DB Tier.

Adding EBS packages into the cluster After the EBS packages are configured, you must verify the configuration. If the configurations are verified without errors, add them to the cluster. The APPS and DB packages of EBS should be configured in two separate recovery groups. In Continentalclusters, recovery group is used to define a set of related primary packages on one cluster and the recovery packages on another cluster that protect the primary packages. The cmrecovercl command, when run, will start up the recovery packages and enables switching during the cluster recovery operation. The cmrecovercl command may only be run when there is an outage at primary site and a timeout has occurred.

Summary Integrating the Oracle EBS environment with Serviceguard using Serviceguard Extension for Oracle E-Business Suite leads to a robust business system that can react to unexpected failures and take automated actions when those failures occur. Fewer servers lead to simpler and reduced management which in this example configuration requires just a single database system paired with a single active applications tier server.
