Emulating IBM disk arrays and control units
XP7 storage systems in a mainframe environment are configured to emulate IBM disk arrays. All
disk volumes must emulate an IBM disk array and follow IBM standard formatting. The IBM file
structure standard for disk volumes is CKD or ECKD. This standard specifies the record format of
volumes, and ensures that each record consists of a count field and, optionally, a key field and
data field. The standard also uses the EBCDIC character set (not the ASCII character set used in
open systems).
XP7 storage is configured to emulate IBM standard CUs and volume types. The emulated standard
volumes present the same number of cylinders and capacity to the mainframe as the native S/390
volume type of the same name.
Table 50 (page 98) lists the CU and volume types that the XP7 storage systems can emulate in a
mainframe environment.
