Zoning guidelines for C-series FICON directors
To configure C-series FICON director zoning, observe the following best practices:
• All FICON ports should be in the same zone or VSAN.
• For FICON-only fabrics, the fabric should be in one zone (no zoning required).
• In an intermix environment, do not mix FCP and FICON ports in the same zone or VSAN. Use
Fibre Channel zoning guidelines for the FCP ports, as described in the HP SAN Design
Reference Guide. For more information about intermix, see “FICON SAN best practices”
(page 154).
• Do not use VSAN 1 for ports in production.
NOTE: The default VSAN is VSAN 1, which is typically used for communication,
management, or testing purposes. As a best practice, do not use VSAN 1 for production,
unless you need only one VSAN for your entire fabric.
Primary management director recommendation (C-series FICON directors)
Figure 12 (page 62) shows a typical C-series FICON high-availability configuration with mainframe
and storage system connections to different fabrics. It provides two paths for data access between
the mainframe and storage system. The addition of an ISL between Fabric A and Fabric B enables
you to manage both fabrics through a single management server. This configuration is classified
as a level 3 high-availability configuration. For information about SAN data availability levels,
see “Data availability” (page 19).
