HP Mainframe Connectivity Design Guide

FC-to-SONET Fibre Channel to Synchronous Optical Network. A gateway that resides at the end of an intersite
link and encapsulates Fibre Channel frames into SONET packets before transmitting the frames
over the network.
FCC Fibre Channel Congestion Control. A feature that allows C-series switches to intelligently regulate
traffic across ISLs and ensure that each initiator-target pair of devices has the required bandwidth
for data transfer.
FCIP Fibre Channel over Internet Protocol.
FCIP circuits FCIP source and destination address pairs.
FCoE Fibre Channel over Ethernet. A technology that allows a convergence of Ethernet and Fibre
Channel fabrics.
FCP Fibre Channel Protocol.
FCR Fibre Channel Routing.
FCS Fibre Channel switch.
FCSA Fibre Channel ServerNet Adapter. The HP NonStop version of Fibre Channel HBAs, used to
connect to P9500 or XP disk arrays.
FCV FICON converter.
Fibre Channel A serial data transport infrastructure and protocol used to implement SANs. See also http://
www.fibrechannel.org/ and http://www.t11.org/.
FICON Fibre connectivity. Hardware that connects the mainframe to the CU.
FRU Field-replaceable unit.
FTA FICON Tape Acceleration. A licensed feature that extends ISL distance and reduces application
latency caused by distance for tape and virtual tape applications.
G
Gb/s Gigabits per second.
GbE Gigabit Ethernet. An Ethernet standard for transmitting data at 1 Gb/s.
GBIC Gigabit interface converter. A hardware module that connects fiber optic cables to a device and
converts electrical signals to optical signals.
GDPS Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex. A method of connecting mainframes in one or more
data centers to provide automatic backup and recovery in the event of a disaster.
See also Sysplex.
GLM Gigabit link module. A 1 Gb/s fiber optic transceiver.
H
HA High availability. The relative ability of a system to operate continuously, regardless of the type
of failure.
HBA Host bus adapter. A hardware device that connects the host server to the fabric.
HCD Hardware configuration definition. An interactive software tool used to define the mainframe and
create the IODF.
HDS Hitachi Data Systems.
heterogeneous A mixed environment that incorporates different operating systems, protocols, architectures, and
equipment from different vendors or product families.
HiperSockets High-speed internal virtual LANs that perform like TCP/IP networks on the System z9 and zSeries
server. Provide LPAR-to-LPAR communications in the Sysplex.
HMC Hardware management console.
hop An interswitch link between a pair of FICON directors.
See also ISL.
HotCAT Hot Code Activation Technology. A McDATA switch feature that provides nondisruptive code
activation.
