HP Mainframe Connectivity Design Guide

device address A unique number assigned to each device in the LCU. Also known as the unit number or unit
address. When combined with the LCU number, provides a unique identifier for a volume in the
storage system.
device number A unique number assigned to an I/O device, logical device, or volume and used by the system
operator. Also know as the UCB.
director This is the FICON equivalent of a Fibre Channel switch.
director fabric A director-class FICON SAN fabric that connects the storage system to the mainframe or open
system servers.
discovery
authentication
A security method where the fabric presents only a partial list of authorized devices. Also known
as soft zoning.
disk volume See device.
DKC Disk Controller Chassis. The P9500 can contain one or two DKCs.
DLS Dynamic load sharing.
double-byte link
addressing
An addressing scheme that defines the destination director and egress port to which the CU is
connected. Used for cascaded FICON routing when the CU and the CHPID are connected to
two different directors.
DPS Dynamic path selection.
DWDM Dense wavelength division multiplexing. The technique of placing several optical signals on a
single optical cable simultaneously.
See also WDM.
E
EBS Enterprise Backup Solution. HP SAN backup software.
ECKD Extended check key data. A standard IBM file structure for disk volumes.
EMIF ESCON Multiple Image Facility or Enhanced Multiple Image Facility. A mainframe feature that
allows multiple LPARs to share ESCON channel paths.
See also ESCON and LPAR.
enterprise Any large organization where information technology is essential for continuing operations.
entry switch The FICON director that is directly connected to the mainframe's FICON channel.
EOS Enterprise Output System.
ESCON Enterprise Systems Connection. An optical interface used to connect the mainframe to the CU; a
predecessor to FICON.
eServer IBM mainframe enterprise server.
EVA HP Enterprise Virtual Array. A high-performance, high-capacity, and high-availability storage
solution for the high-end enterprise class marketplace. An EVA storage system consists of a pair
of HSV virtualizing storage controllers and the disk drives they manage.
F
fabric A network of one or more FICON directors that transmit data between any two N_Ports on any
of the directors.
failover An automatic method for transferring operations from a failed system to a secondary, identical
system.
FC Fibre Channel. A comprehensive set of standards for concurrent communication among servers,
storage systems, and peripheral devices.
FC-AL Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop. A serial, full-duplex, data transfer architecture for high-performance
storage systems.
FC-SB-2 A FICON protocol that supports single-director SANs.
FC-SB-3 A FICON protocol that supports cascaded FICON directors.
FC-SB-4 A FICON protocol that supports high-performance FICON features, including Transport Mode.
FC-to-ATM Fibre Channel to Asynchronous Transfer Mode.
