B-series FICON director FCIP extension options
When B-series FICON directors (DC SAN Backbone Director, DC04 SAN Director, and 4/256
SAN Director) are used in conjunction with B-series FCIP products (FR4-18i MPR blade and 400
MPR), they are certified for FICON extension in the five configurations shown in Figure 32 (page
148).

When 400 MPRs are used between the director and the IP circuit, as shown in the top three
configurations in Figure 32 (page 148), FICON connections from CHPIDs or CUs to the 400 MPR
are not allowed. FICON connections from CHPIDs or CUs are allowed on the end 400 MPR only,
as shown in the third and fourth configuration from the top of Figure 32 (page 148). This restriction
does not apply to the FR4-18i blade.
C-series MDS 9216i, 9222i, IPS-4, IPS-8, 14/2, and 18/4 modules
The following C-series multi-protocol modules provide MDS FCIP and iSCSI functionality:
• IPS-4, IPS-8, 14/2, and 18/4 modules—Integrate seamlessly with the C-series SN8000C and
MDS 95xx directors and support the full range of features, including VSANs, security, and
traffic management. The IPS-4, IPS-8, 14/2, and 18/4 modules have four, eight, two, and
four 1 Gb/s Ethernet ports,
nl
respectively.
• 9216i and 9222i Multilayer Fabric switches—Have two 1 Gb/s Ethernet ports.
Each IP port supports either FCIP or iSCSI, but not both at the same time. FCIP support includes
FICON over IP.
C-series FCIP products can support FICON extension up to 3,000 km for FICON tape (including
VTS and VSM) when using the optional FTA feature. All other FICON applications are supported
up to 300 km.
