HP Mainframe Connectivity Design Guide
FICON and FICON SAN extension bandwidth requirements
To prevent FICON from timing out and taking devices offline, the system must present
acknowledgments to the application in a timely manner. HP recommends the following minimum
circuit bandwidth values:
• 50 Mb/s (6.25 MB/s) of circuit bandwidth for each FICON port being extended
• 62.5 Mb/s (7.8 MB/s) of circuit bandwidth for each IBM VTC port being extended
Table 89 (page 143) lists the HP FCIP gateways and supported FICON directors.

C-series“C-series MDS 9216i, 9222i, IPS-4, IPS-8, 14/2, and 18/4 modules”
For information about products supported with McDATA directors, see “Certified third-party WDM
and FCIP products” (page 152).
B-series 1606 Extension SAN Switch and DC Dir Switch MP Extension Blade
The B-series 1606 Extension SAN Switch and DC Dir Switch MP Extension Blade offer FCIP SAN
extension and FICON/Fibre Channel switching in a FICON SAN. You can use all these functions
on the same 1606 Extension SAN Switch or DC Dir Switch MP Extension Blade simultaneously.
A 1606 Extension SAN Switch can have:
• Up to 6 1-GbE IP ports for FCIP
• Up to 16 F_Ports for FICON/FC switching
A DC Dir Switch MP Extension Blade can have:
• Up to 10 1-GbE IP ports for FCIP
• Up to 2 10-GbE IP ports for FCIP
• Up to 12 F_Ports for FICON/FC switching
For more information, see “FICON SAN extension overview” (page 121).
NOTE: The FCR services of the 1606 Extension SAN Switch and DC Dir Switch MP Extension
Blade are not supported for FICON. For information about FCR, see the HP SAN Design Reference
Guide.
The B-series 1606 Extension SAN Switch and DC Dir Switch MP Extension Blade can support
FICON extension of up to 300 km without the optional Advanced FICON Accelerator license.
B-series Advanced FICON Accelerator
The B-series 1606 Extension SAN Switch and DC Director Switch MP Extension Blade offer an
optional Advanced FICON Accelerator with FOS 6.4.0a and later. This accelerator:
• Supports tape and virtual tape applications over long-distance FCIP ISLs
• Supports the IBM TotalStorage Global Mirror (Extended Remote Copy or XRC) application
over long-distance FCIP ISLs
• With FOS 7.0.0c or later, supports Teradata, printers, and the Prizm FICON to ESCON
converter and ESBT Bus/Tag Interface Module manufactured by Optica Technologies, Inc.
