Virtual Storage Manager
VSM presents virtual tape drives and volumes to the mainframe. You configure VSM systems on
the mainframe as tape drives to provide a storage replication solution for mainframe tapes. The
current VSM systems are as follows:
• VSM5—Supports FICON
• VSM4, VSM4e—Supports FICON and ESCON
• VSM3 and earlier—Do not support FICON
Figure 22 (page 128) shows a VSM front-end extension with the FICON channels extended between
the mainframe and VSM.
