FICON SAN extension overview
A FICON SAN extension is an extended ISL connection between directors linking two sites.
An extended FICON ISL is any distance greater than the supported maximum of the director ports,
as well as:
The distances described in “Storage product interface and transport distance rules (page 75)
Any distance greater than that listed in Table 40 (page 77), Table 42 (page 79), or
Table 43 (page 80)
Any distance between a pair of WDM or FCIP products
NOTE: The maximum repeated distance for FICON is 100 km. WDM products (CWDM and
DWDM) can extend FICON up to 100 km. DWDM products can extend FICON to 300 km; this
may require a request for price quotation from IBM. Any distance greater than 300 km requires
an FCIP extension product. For the FICON-supported distances, see “FICON SAN fabric connectivity
rules” (page 71).
You can implement a FICON SAN extension in any FICON topology. Figure 14 (page 122) shows
three FICON SAN extension examples.
