Enabling IP Printing
IP Printing requires a valid TCP/IP configuration on your Macintosh workstation and on your ColorSpan
Legacy print server. If your workstation and print server are part of a larger network, consult the person
in your organization who is responsible for network decisions before proceeding.
If your Macintosh workstation and ColorSpan Legacy print server are the only computers on your
network, you can use the following TCP/IP network numbers:
192.168.0.1 for your print server.
192.168.0.2 for your workstation (use “...0.3”, “...0.4”, etc., for additional workstations on your
network).
Consult your Macintosh documentation and your ColorSpan Legacy print server documentation for full
details on configuring TCP/IP network properties. Apple Knowledgebase article 106659 provides
generous information and references on configuring IP addresses for MacOS computers.
Recommended ColorSpan Legacy resource documents include the System Control User Guide
(document 0706090) and ColorSpan Printing Tools for Macintosh User Guide (document 0700001).
Once you have made the necessary network configurations, you are ready to add a printer to the
operating system.
Adding a Printer to OS X
1. Press “Shift-Command-A” to open the Applications folder.
2. Locate the “Utilities” folder and double-click to open.
3. Locate the “Print Center” utility and double-click to launch.
4. In the Print Center, click the “Add” button”.
5. Select the network protocol (AppleTalk or IP Printing, as determined earlier in this document).
a. AppleTalk
i. Select an AppleTalk zone, if applicable. If you have a network with no zones, choose “Local
AppleTalk Zone”.
ii. Select the appropriate printer from the list that appears. Note that the name of the
ColorSpan printer will be in the format “Server-name Port-name”, where “Server-name” is
the name of your ColorSpan Legacy print server as it appears at the top of the server
screen, and “Port-name” is the name of the AppleTalk port configured on your server.
Example: if using the defaults on your print server, the name of your printer in the OS X
print center will most likely appear as “ColorMark Pro AppleTalk”.
iii. With the appropriate printer highlighted, click the menu for “Printer Model”.
iv. Choose “ColorSpan”.
v. Locate your printer in the list of choices and click once to highlight the choice. The selection
you make here determines the PostScript Printer Description (PPD) that will be used. The
PPD provides information about the printer to the printing system and applications.
Some PPDs include “CMRIP” in the file name. Files with “CMRIP” are for use with
ColorSpan RIPStation print servers and the ColorMark Legacy Personal Software RIP,
which have a smaller number of fonts built-in.
