newer) to take advantage of improvements to OS X print services.
This document covers Printing Tools 9.70. Older versions of printing tools may vary somewhat from the

Before adding a Printer to OS X: Network
Considerations
Once the printing tools are installed, you are prepared to add a printer. Before doing so, however, you
must decide what networking protocol to use. For the MacOS operating system, the two choices are
AppleTalk and IP Printing (TCP/IP). Which protocol you use is significantly influenced by your print
server (RIP).
All ColorSpan Legacy “hardware” RIPs–ColorMark Pro and RIPStation–support both AppleTalk and IP
Printing. Protocols supported by the ColorSpan Legacy “software” RIPs–ColorMark Professional,
ColorMark Legacy Personal, ColorMark Legacy–depend on the host operating system. Windows XP
does not support AppleTalk. If your ColorMark Legacy software RIP is installed on a Windows XP
system, you must use IP Printing. If your ColorMark Legacy software RIP is installed on Windows 2000
or Windows NT 4 system, you may use either IP Printing or AppleTalk at your discretion.
Enabling AppleTalk
AppleTalk is supported by OS X, but it is not enabled by default. If you have not previously enabled
AppleTalk, you must do so before proceeding.
