ColorSpan Legacy Print Server - Configuration Options Guide
2
Document Scope
HP’s Print Server Software that runs on ColorMark Legacy Pro and ColorMark Legacy RIP Station print
servers has numerous options that can be configured for a variety of printing needs and results. These
configurations are made primarily to the Input Ports, and to a lesser extent to the raster image
processor (RIP) itself, to specific printers, and to individual jobs.
All of the information presented below has been gathered together from several sources, each original
source already available to the end user. These sources include the System Control User Guide, the
Print Server and Driver Setup Guides for the various, specific printers, and the on-screen help included
with the ColorSpan print server software. This document represents an effort to compile relevant
information from all of these sources and present it in a single reference guide that can be quickly
consulted.
This document does not cover aspects of server management such as choosing ink & media
transforms or color profiles, routing, the server “Preferences” menu, or choosing appropriate ink &
media combinations for printing. For assistance on these topics, please consult the sources listed
above.
Some of the options described below are not available for all printers, or have been removed from
newer versions of the Print Server software. If an option described in this document does not appear in
your installation, that option is not supported either by your software or by your printer model.
Print Server Overview
Configurations made to the Input Port(s) affect every job that arrives at the server over the network
through that particular port. The Port configurations are defaults; that is, unless the user makes a
specific configuration to any given job before it is sent to the print server, such as in a graphics
application or the ColorSpan Downloader Utility, the job will be assigned the Port configuration values
for each option available. User-defined options assigned to incoming jobs always override the Input Port
defaults. To view or change the port configuration, use the mouse to point-and-click on the desired port
icon and select “Configure...” from the menu that appears.
Configurations made to the RIP have less of an impact on the typical workflow; it is only when a job
raises a PostScript or other processing error that the RIP configurations come to the forefront. Many
users will never have to change the default RIP configurations. To view or change the RIP
configuration, use the mouse to point-and-click on the RIP icon and select “Configure...” from the menu
that appears.
Configurations made to the printer affect every job that is printed through that printer. There are few
options to configure for the printer itself on the server, generally only one or two; most printer-specific
configurations are made through the printer’s control panel. To view or change the printer configuration,
use the mouse to point-and-click on the printer icon and select “Configure...” from the menu that
appears.
Port Configuration Options
The Input Ports have numerous configuration options that cannot all be displayed simultaneously. The
RIP, EPS/TIFF, and Printing options are each displayed as separate screens; the ColorMark CMS
options are always visible at the bottom of each of the screens.
RIP Options- these settings affect how print jobs will be processed by the PostScript interpreter.
Image Quality- Some options listed below may not be available on all printers.
