HP XP24000/XP20000 Virtual LVI/LUN (VLL) and Volume Shredder User Guide (T5214-96094, November 2011)
Defining the Shredding Settings
To execute a shredding operation without using the default settings, use the Shredding Param.
dialog box to define your shredding settings, which will be used to delete the data from the volumes.
To define the shredding settings:
1. Make sure that Remote Web Console is in Modify mode.
For detailed information about Modify mode, see the HP XP24000/XP20000 Remote Web
Console User Guide.
2. Click Shredding Param. in the Customized Volume window (“Customized Volume Window”
(page 24)). The Shredding Param. dialog box is displayed.
3. Select User in the Write Data Type field.
If you selected Default, go to step 8. If you selected User, go to step 4.
4. Select Define or Random in the Write Data field.
If you selected Define, go to step 5. If you selected Random, go to step 6.
5. Enter the dummy data in the text box.
6. Click Set. A row will be added to the Format List.
7. When you have selected Define in the Write Data field, repeat steps 5 and 6 until rows in the
Format List become equal to N, the number of shredding operations, including the Last Data
row. When you have selected Random in the Write Data field, repeat step 6 until rows in the
Format List become equal to N, the number of shredding operations, including the Last Data
row.
The number of rows = The number of shredding operations to perform.
N = The number of shredding operations necessary to overwrite data in target volume with
dummy data (see “ Calculating the Number of Shredding Operations Necessary to Overwrite
Data in Target Volume with Dummy Data to Delete” (page 85)).
CAUTION: Performing Volume Shredder once can set the parameters for performing
dummy-data writes up to eight times.
This is possible if the capacity of the data-deleting target volume per flash disk exceeds the
following:
Capacity of target volume per flash diskFor
11GB or moreSDT2 * — S072FC
21GB or moreSDT2 * — S146FC
29GB or moreSDT2 * — S200FC
58GB or moreSDT2 * — S400FC
(The data-deleting capacity per flash disk = capacity of target volume / data in RAID
configuration.)
In addition, integrating target volumes can reduce the number of Volume Shredder operations.
If the capacity of a data-deleting target volume is less than those described, you must perform
a Volume Shredder operation (“Defining the Shredding Settings” (page 81) and “Deleting the
Data in the Target Volume” (page 82)) twice or more.
Repeat the Volume Shredding operation until the number of dummy data writes equals the
number of shredding operations N.
8. Click OK. The Shredding Param. dialog box closes.
