HP StorageWorks XP24000/XP20000 Continuous Access Software User Guide (T5278-96049, November 2011)
Table 16 (page 41) shows the currency of the data on a shared XP Continuous Access/XP Business
Copy volume based on XP Continuous Access and XP Business Copy pair status.
For further information on XP Business Copy, see HP XP24000/XP20000 Business Copy Software
User Guide.
NOTE: HP recommends XP Business Copy for intra-storage system copy operations. If XP Business
Copy is not installed, XP Continuous Access (Synchronous only) can be used to copy within the
same storage system. This configuration requires at least one fibre cable loop.
• For shared XP Continuous Access/XP Business Copy volumes, the XP Continuous Access pair
status is reported to the host if you query the XP Continuous Access P-VOL or S-VOL. To obtain
the XP Business Copy pair status, query the XP Business Copy P-VOL pair.
• XP Business Copy supports multiple S-VOLs for each P-VOL. If you issue a pair status query to
an XP Business Copy P-VOL (for example, Detail), the status for only one XP Business Copy
pair is reported (the pair with the S-VOL with the lowest LDEV ID). To obtain the pair status
for the XP Business Copy pair(s) with the other S-VOL(s), you must direct the host query to the
specific S-VOL using the S-VOL’s LDEV ID in the host command. XP Business Copy displays
the port, GID (host group number), LUN, LDEV ID, and XP Business Copy pair status of all
S-VOLs associated with a P-VOL.

Figure 7 (page 42) through Figure 10 (page 43) show the various XP Continuous Access/XP
Business Copy configurations that share volumes. XP Continuous Access supports synchronous and
asynchronous operations for shared XP Continuous Access/XP Business Copy volumes.
• Figure 7 (page 42) shows an example of an XP Continuous Access P-VOL that also functions
as an XP Business Copy P-VOL. This configuration allows you to use XP Business Copy for
on-site data backup in case of an XP Continuous Access failure, and to use XP Continuous
Access to provide remote backup of the XP Business Copy P-VOL in case of an XP Business
Copy failure.
