6Using JournalGroups
Reviewing Administrator Tasks for Managing Journals
To introduce Continuous Access Journal in your system and configure your system for remote copy
operations, the primary site a dministrator and the secondary site adm inistrator must configure journal
groups, as well as p orts and logical paths. Also, these administrators must register journal volumes in
journal groups. During Continuous Access Journal remote copy operations, data in primary data volumes
are copied via journal volumes to secondary data volumes.
When configuring journal groups, the administrators must do the following:
• Display the Journal Operation window (see “Journal O peration Window”onpage77)
• Register journal volumes in journal groups (see
“Registering Journal V olumes in a Journal Group” on page 111)
When con figuring journal g roups, the administrator should do the following when necessary:
• Delete journal volumes from journal groups (see
“Deleting Journal Volumes from a Journal Group” on page 115)
• View detailed information about journal groups (see
“Displaying Detailed Information about a Journal Group” on page 115)
•
Change journal group options (see “Chang ing Options for a Journal Group” on page 119)
• Delete journal groups (see “Deleting a Journal Group” on page 121)
When Continuous Access Journal is used for remote copy operations, the administrator should d o
the
following when necessary:
• Split mirrors (see “Splitting a Mirror (Pairsplit-r: Suspending a Copy Operation)”onpage122)
•
Restore mirrors (see “Restoring a Mirror (Pairresync: Resuming a Copy Operation)”onpage123)
• Delete data volumes (that is, the primary and the secondary data volumes) from m irrors (see
“Deleting Data Volumes from a Mirror (Pairsplit-S: Ending a Copy Operation)” on page 124)
Note
: Throughout this chapter, the primary and the secondary storage systems are sometimes referred to
as local
storage systems or remote storage systems. If you are logged into the primary storage system
and
are using Continuous Access Journal, the primary storage system is a local storage system a nd the
secondary storage system is a remote storage system. If you are logged into the secondar y storage
system and a re using Continuous Access Journal, the secondary storage system is a local storage system
and
the primary storage system is a remote storage system.
Regis
tering Journal Volumes in a Journal Group
To per
form remote copy operations with Continuous Access Journal, the primar y site administrator
must register journal volumes in journal groups in the primary storage system. Also, the secondary s ite
administrator must register journal volumes in journal groups in the secondary storage system. One
journ
al
group can contain up to 64 journal volumes.
To reg
ister journal volumes, follow the procedure below. Both the primary storage system administrator
and
t
he
secondary storage system administrator must perform this operation.
