Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an industry-standard the protocol for managing and
monitoring network devices, including disk devices, routers, and hubs. SNMP uses Simple Gateway
Management Protocol (SGMP) to manage the TCP/IP gateways.
The standardized conguration and database of network management information is called a
Management Information Base (MIB). A standard MIB is common to all SNMP interfaces. An extension
MIB is dened by the particular managed device or protocol.
An SNMP manager monitors the devices, which are referred to as managed nodes. The primary types
of interaction between the SNMP manager and an SNMP agent are polling and trap.Typically, the
SNMP manager polls the SNMP agents on a periodic basis, to determine whether the device is operating
normally. If an abnormal event occurs, the SNMP Agent can report the condition without a request from
the manager, by using a message called trap.
SNMP Manager Overview
SNMP Manager is mounted on a Network Management Station and gathers and manages information
from SNMP agents of multiple managed network devices.
For details on SNMP Manager, see the manual of the SNMP Manager mounted on the Network
Mana
gement Station.
SNMP Agent Overview
SNMP agent is mounted on a managed network device (such as disk devices) and gathers usage and
error information, and transfers the gathered information to the SNMP manager.
