1 XP Disk/Cache Partition for the XP10000/XP12000 The HP StorageWorks XP Disk/Cache Partition feature prevents performance degradation and data loss that occur when connecting multiple hosts and sharing disk arrays among multiple departments and multiple companies. XP Disk/Cache Partition provides a mechanism to safeguard disk array configurations by isolating operational areas. There is a possibility of changing or deleting a configuration created for a specific customer by mistake.
Virtual cache memory that the cache logical partition function partitions is referred to as CLPR. Figure 1 Example of a CLPR Figure 1 shows how a corporation’s cache memory is partitioned to three virtual cache memories. Although the Branch A host is inputting and outputting a large amount of data, the Branch B and Branch C hosts are unaffected because each branch is allocated 40 GB CLPR.
parity groups (PGs) and cache in the non-partitioned environment. After the disk array is partitioned, CLPR0 contains the remaining PGs and cache that are not allocated to other CLPRs. Figure 2 Example of an SLPR Figure 2 shows an example of one disk array partitioned into two virtual disk arrays. Each virtual disk array is allocated to one enterprise. Enterprise A’s disk array administrator can manage enterprise A’s virtual disk array, but cannot manage enterprise B’s disk array.

3. Click the Partition Definition tab. Figure 3 Partition Definition pane This pane contains the following: • Tree: Displays SLPRs in the disk array. The SLPR number and name are displayed to the right of the SLPR icon. • Subsystem resource list: Displays information about SLPRs. • No.: Line number. • Item: Type of resources. • Name: SLPR number and name. • Cache (Num. of CLPRs): Cache capacity and number of CLPRs in the SLPR. • Num of PGs: Number of parity groups in the CLPR of each SLPR.
Working with CLPRs Figure 4 Partition Definition pane (CLPR selected) When a CLPR is selected, the pane displays the following: • CU: Displays the selected CU’s parity groups in the CLPR resource list. • Tree: Lists the disk array’s SLPRs and CLPRs. • CLPR resource list: Displays information about the selected CLPR. • No.: Line number. • Resource Type: Type of CLPR resource: Parity Group, DCR Cache, or PCR Cache. • Address: Parity group’s address.
NOTE: The maximum available cache capacity (capacity of mounted cache minus total amount of usage for other CLPRs) is displayed for each upper limit of Cache Size, Cache Residency Size, and Partial Cache Residence Size. The remaining capacity, which is calculated by subtracting Cache Residency Size and Partial Cache Residence Size from Cache Size, must be 4 GB or more in CLPR0. • Apply: Applies settings. • Cancel: Cancels settings that were entered or selected, and restores settings to initial values.
Working with SLPRs Figure 5 Partition Definition pane (SLPR selected) When an SLPR is selected on the Partition Definition pane, the pane displays the following: • Tree: Displays SLPRs and CLPRs in the disk array. • SLPR resource list: Displays information about the selected SLPR’s resources (CLPRs and ports). If SLPR0 is selected, all resources that have not yet been allocated to SLPRs are displayed. • No.: Line number. • Resource Type: Type of SLPR resources: Cache Partition or Port.
NOTE: If users in the StorageAdmins group who have partition-level access want to use the Customized Volume function, first specify the CU for each SLPR to prevent overlapping the newly allocated CU numbers and the existing CU numbers in other SLPRs. If CU numbers are not specified first, users in the StorageAdmins group who have partition-level access cannot use the Customized Volume function. • SSID(* in use): SSID in the selected SLPR (0004 to FFFE).
NOTE: You can assign a user to an SLPR that has not yet been created. However, if the SLPR does not exist, an error occurs when that user attempts to launch Command View AE or XP Remote Web Console. Creating SLPRs If you have not yet created an SLPR in the disk array, all of the disk array’s resources are in SLPR0. To divide the resources, create a new SLPR. Only Administrators can create SLPRs. 1. Right-click Subsystem, and select Create SLPR. 2. Select an SLPR. 3. Change SLPR settings as needed. 4.
Displaying error messages If settings contain a discrepancy, an error message appears when you click Apply. To display the error message again, right-click the SLPR, and select Error Detail. Notes, restrictions, and requirements This section provides additional information about using SLPRs and CLPRs. CLPRs • When you create a partition, the partition’s license keys are disabled by default. Use the License Key Partition Definition tab on the Install pane to enable license keys for the new partition.
