HP ProLiant SL4545 G7 Server Overview Setup Poster
Based on the total number ordered and the planned configuration,
install the following components:
• Nodes
• Drives
• Drive blanks
• Power supplies
• Power supply blanks
• System fans
• Management module
• I/O modules
• I/O module blanks
IMPORTANT: Always populate drive bays from the rear
to the front starting with the highest device bay ID number.
All unpopulated drive bays require drive blanks to
properly distribute air flow and cool the installed drives.
For more information, see the appropriate chassis setup and
installation guide and the node installation instructions.
Powering up the chassis
1. Connect the power cables to the power supplies.
2. Connect the power cables to the power source (UPS or wall
outlet) or to an installed PDU.
3. Press the Power On/Standby button on the node.
Examine the HP ProLiant SL Advanced Power Manager for any errors
that might prevent installed components from powering up.
Configuring the chassis
For further information on setting up and configuring your system, see
the HP ProLiant SL4500 Series Quick Setup Instructions and the HP
ProLiant SL4500 Series Setup and Installation Guide.
Installing the operating system for
G7 servers
To operate properly, the system must have a supported operating
system installed. For the latest information on supported operating
systems, see the HP website (http://www.hp.com/go/supportos).
To install the operating system, use one of the following methods:
• PXE delivery of an OS from a network PXE server, if one is
available.
• Manual installation—Insert the operating system CD into the
USB-attached DVD-ROM drive (user provided) and reboot the
node.
You will need to download the HP Service Pack for ProLiant from the
SPP download site (http://www.hp.com/go/spp/download) and
create SPP media so that you can install the drivers.
The SmartStart 8.70 CD is included with the system to allow you to
create a driver diskette or USB key with the "HP Smart Array B110i
controller" driver (hpahcisr). If you are installing the operating system
onto the small form factor node hard drives and you want to use the HP
Smart Array B110i controller to control them, you will need this driver.
The diskette or USB key you create with this driver can then be used
during installation of a supported operating system. Do not use the
HP SmartStart 8.70 CD for anything else. For complete instructions on
creating the driver diskette or USB key, see the node user guide on the
Documentation CD.
Deploying management software
HP Insight Management is an integrated suite of software used to
simplify provisioning and management of your HP ProLiant SL4500
Series solution.
Use the wizard-based installer to configure and license HP Systems
Insight Manager (HP SIM) and Insight Management software rapidly
and consistently, which reduces manual procedures and enables faster
production deployment of HP SL servers.
If previous chassis have been installed, it is not necessary to deploy the
management software. New devices are discovered and can be
managed by the previously installed management system, version 7.x
or later.
Before deploying the management software and creating provisioning
policies, do the following:
• Complete the installation checklist.
• Be sure that the HP ProLiant SL4545 G7 Server, switches, and
associated storage resources are configured.
• Verify that a supported operating system is installed. If the
operating system has not been installed, see the operating system
installation documentation.
Launch Insight Management and use the installation wizard to deploy
and configure HP SIM and Insight Management software. After
installation completes, log in to HP SIM using the credentials supplied
during the installation process.
For more information, see the HP Insight Management portfolio at the
HP website (http://www.hp.com/go/insight).
Discovering and provisioning new
devices
Use HP SIM to discover HP SL solution resources and view those
resources. For more information, see the HP Insight Management
Installation and Configuration Guide on the HP website
(http://www.hp.com/go/insightmanagement/docs).
Registering the server
To register the server, refer to the HP Registration website
(http://register.hp.com).
