When the Self Tests Fail
If the Power-On Self-Test (POST) appears hung, one of the self-tests is unable
to complete. Briefly remove the designated access panel to inspect, and
perform each of the following. Restart the server after each action to see if the
problem is resolved.
1. Verify all required switch settings are set as dictated by your servers
user documentation.
2. Verify that all expansion boards, drives, and processors are firmly
seated, and all latches are firmly closed.
3. Verify all system internal and external cables are properly attached and
not damaged.
4. Replace the processor with a known functional processor. If multiple
processors are installed, replace all but one of the processors with
processor terminator boards and remove all but the processor power
module (PPM) associated with the processor still installed.
5. Replace the currently installed memory with known good memory. If
your server has multiple memory expansion boards, replace one of the
memory expansion boards with a known good memory board, if
possible.
If the above steps do not correct the server problem, see the section
Procedures for Contacting Compaq, in Chapter 1.
Properly Seating Devices
Good device connections are essential to a functioning server. To ensure a
device is properly seated:
1. Push the device in to ensure it is tightly connected.
2. If the device has cables, make sure they are tightly connected.
3. If the device has latches, make sure that all latches are completely
closed.
4. If pushing the device in does not solve the problem, remove the device,
reinstall it, and then firmly push it in again.
