D: Known and fixed issues, TeachNow V1.1
Back to Appendices
Back to document index.
These are the known issues and system limitations that have been determined from system testing of the HP TeachNow
v1.1 release. The information is current as of June, 2010. DSO will publish additional information as it becomes
available.
Known Issues and system limitations
• Changing the desktop theme – Changing the desktop theme on the teacher’s computer, while the
computer is running the Teacher’s application, can cause the teacher application to unexpectedly exit or cause
parts of the text on the display to become illegible.
o Unexpected exit: the Teacher should restart the Teacher’s application. After restarting the
application, they can continue to use the system without further action.
o Illegible text: If some of the text is unreadable due to low contrast between the text and the
background, the teacher should chose an alternate desktop theme.
• TeachNow volume licensing – TeachNow is designed to be used with the MAK (Multiple Activation
Key) style of Microsoft volume licensing. Use of the TeachNow system with a KMS (Key Management Server)
volume license has not been tested and may lead to unpredictable results.
o This limitation is explained in the HP TeachNow and volume licensing
section in this document.
• First time edit – When using the HP supplied supplementary disk to provide a pre-built operating system
for the student desktops, it should be noted that the operating system ships “inactive”, such that the user has to
enter the volume license key to activate that copy of Windows. In this state, the TeachNow software is not able
to control the Thin Client device until after the operating system has been rebooted.
o During the first edit of the pre-built supplementary operating system by the TeachNow
administrator, the administrator should reboot the station and then shuts down the station before
they click “Next” in the Edit Application suite wizard to progress to the testing stage.
• Running the installer – You must be a properly authorized administrator to run the TeachNow installer.
o If the server you are running the installer on is a member of a domain, then you should run the
installer from a domain account that has local administrator privileges on this server.
o If the server is not a member of a domain, then you should run the installer from an account that
has administrator privileges on the server device.
• Admin and teacher simultaneous access – There are some problems that can occur when the
administrator and the teacher try to access the same image at the same time. For example, the administrator
might be trying to update an image at the same time as the teacher is trying to start a class. If the teacher
chooses the image that the admin is updating, there is a chance for the system to become confused, and to
lock the image completely.
o To avoid this, the administrator should make the image “not visible by teacher” prior to editing
the image.
o If the administrator does not do this, and the image gets “locked”, then the system should be
shutdown, the server rebooted.
The admin should go through the edit sequence on that image from beginning to end to
“unlock” it.
• HP TeachNow does not support multiple administrators accessing the system at one time
Administrators that login with the same username will “share” a single session, while administrators who login
with different usernames will disconnect existing sessions. For example:
o If someone logs into the administration console as the user “admin1”, then starts one of the
wizards (such as the edit image wizard), then a second user logging in from another computer
